Chapter Eighteen
When Gary returned from his lunch with Stewart, he found the Post-it note he placed on his computer to remind him to call Tony Cannon regarding fundraising. He reached for the phone and dialed.
A monotone male voice answered the phone. âHarper Institute, how may I direct your call?â
âTony Cannon. Please.â
âOne moment, please.â Silence was followed by what sounded like elevator music.
âThis is Tony Cannon,â said a rushed voice from the other end.
âTony, this is Gary Walsh. Did I catch you at a bad time?â
âOh gosh, Gary, I was actually on my way out. Listen, I called around and I was able to get some people willing to back you, but most of them insisted on anonymity.â
âWhy donât they want their names on it?â Gary sounded hurt.
âI donât know, probably wanting to protect their interests. You gotta expect that.â
âWell, I was hoping we could get together and discuss this in further detail, just so I have an idea of what Iâm dealing with here.â
âYep, I just canât right now. I looked at my schedule and Iâm free late next week. Howâs that?â
âI guess I donât have much of a choice, do I?â
âIâll call you next week and we can set something up. It looks pretty good.â
âOkay, Iâll talk to you then. Take care.â Gary hung up the phone.
Wanda suddenly appeared in the doorway to Garyâs office, looking ravishing in a white pantsuit. She carried several bags of clothes from the most exclusive dress boutiques in the city.
Gary looked at her and smiled. He hadnât been expecting her, but her visit was a nice diversion.
âHello, my dear,â Wanda said.
âLet me help you with those,â Gary said, jumping up to help her with the bags.
âI came by earlier to see if you wanted to have lunch but they told me you had already gone.â
âOh yes, that friend of mine from California came and we had lunch. Do you remember Stewart McKillen?â
Wanda shrugged. âWell, since you werenât available I did a little shopping instead.â
âGlad to see youâve finally made time for yourself to enjoy some of the fruits of all that hard work.â
âYeah, well, I figured taking the day to buy a few things couldnât hurt.â
âA few things,â Gary said, unbelievingly.
âAre you going to be done soon?â
âI donât know. I have to find this damn file.â
âWhat file?â
âItâs a video Iâm using to summarize what I intend to accomplish as president of the BRC. The computer keeps saying itâs been deleted.â
âOh. Maybe you pushed something by mistake.â
âNo! There was no mistake; I know what the hell Iâm doing!â Gary snapped.
âWell, youâve been under a lot of pressure, and people make mistakes when theyâre under pressure. I was just sayingâ¦â
âIâm sorry, baby. Itâs just a lot to deal with right now. Been a long day.â
âWell, we can end the day with a relaxing dinner at Palomino. How does that sound?â
âThat sounds perfect. But I told Stewart that I would call him when I was through here. He got a divorce from his wife, and although itâs been a couple of years, I still think itâs eating at him.
