Chapter Eighteen

When Gary returned from his lunch with Stewart, he found the Post-it note he placed on his computer to remind him to call Tony Cannon regarding fundraising. He reached for the phone and dialed.

A monotone male voice answered the phone. “Harper Institute, how may I direct your call?”

“Tony Cannon. Please.”

“One moment, please.” Silence was followed by what sounded like elevator music.

“This is Tony Cannon,” said a rushed voice from the other end.

“Tony, this is Gary Walsh. Did I catch you at a bad time?”

“Oh gosh, Gary, I was actually on my way out. Listen, I called around and I was able to get some people willing to back you, but most of them insisted on anonymity.”

“Why don’t they want their names on it?” Gary sounded hurt.

“I don’t know, probably wanting to protect their interests. You gotta expect that.”

“Well, I was hoping we could get together and discuss this in further detail, just so I have an idea of what I’m dealing with here.”

“Yep, I just can’t right now. I looked at my schedule and I’m free late next week. How’s that?”

“I guess I don’t have much of a choice, do I?”

“I’ll call you next week and we can set something up. It looks pretty good.”

“Okay, I’ll talk to you then. Take care.” Gary hung up the phone.

Wanda suddenly appeared in the doorway to Gary’s office, looking ravishing in a white pantsuit. She carried several bags of clothes from the most exclusive dress boutiques in the city.

Gary looked at her and smiled. He hadn’t been expecting her, but her visit was a nice diversion.

“Hello, my dear,” Wanda said.

“Let me help you with those,” Gary said, jumping up to help her with the bags.

“I came by earlier to see if you wanted to have lunch but they told me you had already gone.”

“Oh yes, that friend of mine from California came and we had lunch. Do you remember Stewart McKillen?”

Wanda shrugged. “Well, since you weren’t available I did a little shopping instead.”

“Glad to see you’ve finally made time for yourself to enjoy some of the fruits of all that hard work.”

“Yeah, well, I figured taking the day to buy a few things couldn’t hurt.”

“A few things,” Gary said, unbelievingly.

“Are you going to be done soon?”

“I don’t know. I have to find this damn file.”

“What file?”

“It’s a video I’m using to summarize what I intend to accomplish as president of the BRC. The computer keeps saying it’s been deleted.”

“Oh. Maybe you pushed something by mistake.”

“No! There was no mistake; I know what the hell I’m doing!” Gary snapped.

“Well, you’ve been under a lot of pressure, and people make mistakes when they’re under pressure. I was just saying…”

“I’m sorry, baby. It’s just a lot to deal with right now. Been a long day.”

“Well, we can end the day with a relaxing dinner at Palomino. How does that sound?”

“That sounds perfect. But I told Stewart that I would call him when I was through here. He got a divorce from his wife, and although it’s been a couple of years, I still think it’s eating at him.
